Chemical Peels

Chemical PeelsChemical Peels

A chemical peel is a technique used to improve the appearance of the skin on the face, neck or hands.  A chemical solution is applied to the skin that causes it to exfoliate and eventually peel off. The new, regenerated skin is usually smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin. The new skin is also temporarily more sensitive to the sun. People have been using chemical peels on their skin for centuries. In fact, it is documented that Queen Cleopatra of ancient Egypt regularly used the lactic acid from sour milk to rejuvenate her skin.

Unlike other chemical peels, the VI Peel treatments are virtually painless, require no skin pre-conditioning, and deliver results in as little as 7 days.  These peels are also multi-taskers, nurturing skin with vitamins and minerals while going through the exfoliation process.  The peels are the suitable for the face and body.  VI Aesthetic products are practical, well-rounded, effective, and efficient.

VI Peels represent the next generation in chemical peels. Each treatment is virtually pain free and includes a specifically formulated post peel kit which is essential for your treatment’s success, ensuring optimal and lasting results. Do not proceed with the chemical peel treatment if the patient is pregnant or breast feeding.

Do not proceed with the treatment if Isotretinoin (Accutane) has been used within the past 12 months.

Discuss the history of any hypertrophic scarring or keloid formations or other skin diseases.

An accurate diagnosis by a medical professional is necessary prior to the treatment.

Prior to the treatment, clean the treatment area. The treatment area should be free of any makeup, creams, perfumes, and lotions. Male patients should shave just prior to treatment (the pigment in your beard could increase discomfort).

Discontinue sun tanning, use of tanning beds and any application of sunless tanning products one month before the treatment.

Always use an SPF 30 or greater sunblock on all exposed treatment areas. Wear sun protective hats and clothing.

Discontinue the use of exfoliating creams/peels at least 3 days prior to the entire treatment.

If the patient has a history of herpes outbreaks in the areas being treated, a prescribed medication, like Valtrex is recommended for one week prior to the treatment prior to the treatment to help prevent an outbreak.

Patients will need to have:

  • A mild facial cleanser.
  • A high-quality sunblock SPF 30 (zinc and/or titanium dioxide >10%)
  • A good moisturizer available for your after-care.

Is a VI Peel painful?

VI Peel patients rarely experience pain.

Are there instructions for after my VI Peel treatment?

After Treatment
Erythema (redness) will be present in the treatment area and can last from a few hours up to a few days. Treatment areas almost always become erythematous.

  • It is important to protect your skin from environmental elements; therefore, a sunscreen with a SPF protection of at least 30 should be used daily.
  • A few days post procedure, patients will experience mild peeling of the skin. The peeling is like the effects of sunburn. Continue to follow the skin care regimen offered by your medical professional.
  • Do not pick at the peeling skin, as it may lead to scarring.

General Skincare

Proper skin care is important to protect the new refreshed skin. Your medical professional will discuss a proper skincare regimen following your chemical peel treatment.

  • Clean the treated area daily with a mild cleanser. Apply a thin layer of Aquaphor to the area several times a day until evidence of dryness, blistering or swelling has dissipated.
  • Shower as usual but be aware that the treated area may be a little temperature sensitive.
  • Avoid chlorine, hot tubs, saunas, and swimming pools for 7 days post procedure.
  • Avoid direct contact in the sun during your treatment program. Always use a topical sun protection of SPF 30.
  • Avoid the use of exfoliants, loofah sponges and aggressive scrubbing to the treated areas.

Precautions

  • Avoid exposure to the sun and tanning beds for 30 days prior to the treatment.
  • Do not rub, scratch, or pick at the treated area. Treat the area gently. Pat skin dry after bathing or showering. An antibiotic ointment such as Bacitracin may be applied. Neosporin and Polysporin are not recommended.
