WHAT IS A FACELIFT OR NECKLIFT?

As we age, our skin loses elasticity, and the underlying tissues of the face become loose and begin to sag. These and other factors contribute to a facial appearance that may cause a person to look older than he or she feels. Facelift surgery (rhytidectomy) addresses signs of aging in the cheeks, lower face, and neck to restore a more youthful facial appearance.. A necklift is typically one component of a facelift as the neck and face are intimately attached.

WHO WOULD BENEFIT FROM A FACELIFT OR NECKLIFT?

Many patients present with complaints of loose neck skin, loose skin of the jowls, and deepening creases around the mouth. These changes typically begin to occur in the late 30’s and 40’s. One characteristic change of the aging face is the transition from having a face that is youthful and heart shaped into one that is mature and more rectangular. A facelift helps to restore the youthful shape in addition to:

REDUCING WRINKLES

  • Over time, the collagen in our skin breaks down, leading to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. Facelift surgery removes loose, excess skin to produce a smooth, youthful skin texture that will take years off your appearance.

DEFINING THE JAW

  • Displaced and drooping tissues along the jawline can create the appearance of jowls. Facelift surgery tightens the muscles and removes excess tissue for a sleek jawline that creates a more defined, attractive transition from the face to the neck.

FIRMER NECK AND FACE

  • Sagging corners of the mouth and drooping tissues in the cheeks and neck can significantly age your appearance. Facelift surgery repositions the underlying tissues and removes any excess to achieve firmer contours in the face and neck.

HOW DOES FACELIFT SURGERY WORK?

An incision is typically made both under the chin crease and in front of the ear. Through the chin crease incision fat is removed from the jowl and neck and a muscle tightening of the neck muscle(platysma) is performed. The incision in front of the ear is used to elevate the skin of the face and allow redraping with tightening and excess skin excision. Depending on how much skin needs to be tightened one may need a full facelift or just a mini facelift.

MINI FACELIFT

  • Targets the lower portion of the face
  • Best for patients who do not need improvement in the cheek or chin areas
  • Involves short incisions around the ears
  • Removes excess skin and fat, and repositions the underlying tissues

FULL FACELIFT

  • Targets the mid and lower face, jowls, and chin
  • Involves an incision in the hairline from the temples down around the creases of the ear and into the hairline behind the ear
  • Removes excess skin and fat, and repositions the underlying tissues

WILL FACELIFT SURGERY IMPROVE MY FOREHEAD AND AROUND MY EYES?

Facelift surgery only addresses the cheeks, lower face, and neck. Patients who wish to address signs of aging in their upper face often combine a brow lift and/or eyelid lift with their facelift surgery to achieve complete facial rejuvenation.

HOW LONG DOES FACELIFT SURGERY LAST?

The results from a facelift are generally permanent, and patients can enjoy their rejuvenated appearance for years to come. Of course, the face will continue to age naturally after surgery, but patients will continue to look younger than if they had not undergone the procedure. Facelift turns back the clock 10-15 years. You will age, but you will always look 10-15 years younger than your natural age. To maintain optimum results, patients should follow a healthy skin care regimen and wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily.
